Review:

***** 5 out of 5 Stars

Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone is the first book in the Harry Potter series. It is about an eleven year old boy who also happens to be a wizard. Harry is an orphan, his parents were killed by a very powerful dark wizard, who failed to kill Harry when he was a baby this resulted in Harry becoming famous in the wizarding world for being the reason for the downfall of that dark wizard, and is known as 'the boy who lived'. Harry was raised by his non-magical aunt and uncle, and has no idea that he has magical abillites.
This book follows Harry as he discovers that he is a wizard, the truth about his past and what really happened to his parents, and that there is whole other world that exists along side ours which is full of witches, wizards and all sorts of other magical creatures. It also follows him in his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he becomes best friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger and together they have some great adventures. The main adventure in this particular book is discovering what is being guarded by the three headed dog on the third floor, and figuring out who is trying to get it and then ultimately stopping them before they succeed.

I really enjoyed this book, in my opinion it was an excellent introduction to the wizarding world, Hogwarts and the Harry Potter series. I like the way I was able to relate to the characters due to the way that they are described so well, in that you really do feel that you know them personally. The way that Hogwarts, Diagon Alley and other places are depicted give you a sense of reality and I genuinely felt as if I was there with Harry. This book is so well written that it actually suck you into the story so that you are taking apart in the adventures a if you are the fourth member of the group.

My favourite part of this book was when Hagrid finally catches up with Harry at the hut on the rock in the middle of the sea, and delivers Harry his Hogwarts letter. I like this bit because its the first time that Harry actually fells wanted, and is given a small glimmer of hope that his life will change for the better. My favourite character in this book is Ron Weasley, because even though he is from a pure blood wizarding family, he doesn't feel like he is any better than anyone else. He also feels like he will never amount to anything and won't ever be as good as his brothers, but still try's his best.

Overall, I thought that this book was fantastic, I will definitely be continuing with the rest of the series and would absolutely recommend this book to others.
