This is the first book in the Blue Eyes trilogy. It is about Arianna Grace, a 15 year old orphan who lives with her aunt and uncle. It is nearly her sixteenth birthday, her aunt and uncle have told her they are going away but she doesn't know where. While at the cinema she gets a message, from the person who has been sending her messages for the last few months, asking her meet at the bins just before midnight outside the diner where she lives. When she meets the stranger she gets knocked out, and wakes up in a strange house. Here she finds out that the stranger is actually her great uncle Gabriel, she finds out that her parents were murdered, that her aunt and uncle aren't actually her family just close friends of her mothers, that she has a grandfather who she knows nothing about and also that her birthday is today not tomorrow. A boy that she recognizes from her math class is waiting outside her uncles house for her to take her back to the dinner and then to her grandfather's. Before he gets her back there Arianna starts to change, and is in a lot pain, the boy manages to get her to a nearby safe house and feeds her his blood, and Arianna blacks out. She awakes in a strange room, where she can hear a lot of voices. She meets Devin the boy from her maths class, and Molina a girl who catches the same bus as her, they explain that they are her personal security, that she is now at her grandfathers estate and that she is transition becoming a Dearg-Dul. She gets kidnapped from her bedroom, and replaced by a similar looking girl by people trying to fool her grandfather in thinking it is Arianna , so they can bring down Lord Randolph (her grandfather) from the inside. After being rescued by her personal security, she attends a grand ball that is held for her, where it is tradition to feed to complete the transformation, as she feeds all the guests are shocked to discover she has blue eyes. She has to go attend a special night school to learn all about night humans, where she meets turner who is a Lycan, he gives her extra lessons so she can catch up with the other students in class. He also takes her off on adventures like taking her away from the estate early in the morning to visit the city he grew up in, put it causes a panic from her personal security as they didn't know where she was. While in the city they visit Turners father, who throws a dinner party in Arianna's honour, at this dinner party Lord Winter (Turners father) announces to everyone there that Arianna has decided to have Turner as a Keeper (a person who keeps you safe and you can feed on whenever), Turner had asked her earlier that day. She returns to the Randolph Manor after a run in on the train home with the head of another pure-bred Dearg-Dul family, who wants Arianna to marry his son so they inherit the Randolph Estate. Lord Randolph decides along with Devin that Arianna should spilt her time between her Grandfathers and Lilly and Deans, because Arianna is homesick and feels like a prisoner at the estate, so having some time away might put stop her taking unexpected trips again. So Arianna, Devin, Turner and Molina, travel in the middle of night to Lilly and Deans. While there Arianna is to have special lessons at the school she used to attend, she realises that there is quite a few night humans in school with her, including some of her teachers and old classmates. She is invited to another dinner party this time at her uncle Gabriel's. This is no ordinary dinner party, it is an initiation for her to transform in to a Baku, being a prue-bred Baku as well as a Dearg-Dul. After her transformation into Baku, Arianna uses her powers to communicate telepathically with her Grandfather to find that him and Lord Winter have both been poisoned. She, Devin, Turner and Gabriel return to the manor to save them, Lord Randolph sacrifices himself to save Lord Winter, with her grandfather now dead she is head of the Dearg-Duls as well as the Baku's.
I thought that this book was excellent. I liked that this wasn't like normal vampire books, there was a mix of other mythical creatures included in it, like Lycans, Tengus and Bakus, also it gives the vampires the name of Dearg-Dul which makes them seem a bit more mythical. I like this because most vampire books focus on vampires, with a werewolf here and there but not many include over mythical creatures.
My favourite part of this book is when they are on the train on the way to Tricity, after Arianna and Turner have left the Randolph Estate early without informing anyone and Devin has just found them before the train sets off. I like this part because Devin shows that he was really worried about Arianna when he woke and found her missing, which shows Arianna that he does care for her even if he doesn't always show it. My favourite character is Devin because he has been in love with Arianna since they first met at six years old, he would do absolutely anything for her, to keep her safe from harm, and is there to help her through her transformation.
Overall, I thought that this book was brilliant. I will certainly be continuing with this series. I would definitely recommend this book to others especially fans of vampire books.
