Review:

***** 5 out of 5 stars

City Of Ashes is the second book in The Mortal Instrument series. It is about sixteen year old Clary Fray, who has not long found out that she is a shadowhunter, that her mother who is in a coma lied to her all her life, that her father is an evil power hungry criminal and the boy she loves is actually her older brother. Jace is imprisoned for being Valentine's son as the Clave (nephilm council) don't believe he was not working with his father, and while there he witnesses Valentine kill the Silent Brothers, so he could steal the mortal sword. Clary and her friends save Jace and then work together to try to retrieve the mortal cup and mortal sword from Valentine. Valentine is using the blood of young downworlders to make the sword evil, he succeeds in getting faerie blood, and kidnaps Maia (a young werewolf from Luke's pack) and Simon (who has recently turned into a vampire) to succeed in his plan. They find Valentine on a ship guarded by demons, while a battle between demons and shadowhunters takes place on deck, Jace and Clary are searching for their friends and their father in the bowls of the ship. Clary finds Maia and sets her free, then is captured by her father and has a confrontational heart to heart with him. Jace finds Simon dead after having his throat and wrists slit and drained of blood, Jace feeds him his blood to try and revive him which is surprisingly successful. Clary uses her new found power of drawing and amplifying runes to break the ship into pieces ending the battle and saving the Shadowhunters, but Valentine manages to escape with the cup and sword.

I thought that this book was as equally fantastic as the first book in this series, I like the description of Clary and Jace's feelings for each other even though it is forbidden now they are siblings, I think it is descried wonderfully. I also like how Clary's world that has already been turned upside down seems to just get worse and worse but she never seems to lose any hope that it will all work out in the end, it is very inspiring.

My favourite part of this book was when Simon is turned in to a vampire, Raphael (the head vampire of the New York clan) brings him to the institute to inform Clary and the Shadowhunters of what has happened and that he needs to be buried to be able to rise again, so they bury him in the Jewish burial grounds (because he is jewish) and he rises as a Vampire. I like this part because I like the way Clary deals with the fact that her best friend is now a monster, and with her being a nephilm they should be enemies, but to her he is still Simon the boy she has known all her life. My favourite character in this book is Jace Wayland, because the way he torn apart by his feelings for Clary although he should only love her as a sister, and for his father as he has always sort of worshipped his father but now doesn't know what to feel as his father is evil. This made Jace seem very vulnerable when he has always made out that he is nearly indestructible.

Overall, I thought that this was excellent just like its predecessor, again I will be continuing with this series straight away and I would definitely recommend this book to other people especially if they enjoyed the first book.
